How we finish a new lot.

Grade checked first.

We check the slope away from the house before anything goes on top, and fix low spots while it's easy.

Soil where it needs it.

Construction can leave thin soil over packed clay. We bring in fresh soil where the lawn needs it.

Concrete before lawn.

The driveway, walkway and porch pads go in first, so nothing new gets torn up.

Sod last, on one quote.

Sod goes down at the end, with beds, stone and fencing on the same quote and the same schedule.

Landscaping a new build: what to know.

Do things in the right order, and nothing new gets dug up twice.

What order to do things in

Grading first, then concrete and fences, then beds and sprinklers, and sod or turf last. That way, machines aren't driving over a finished lawn.

Check what your builder owes you

If final grading or sod is part of your deal with the builder, find out before you pay someone else to do it.

Don't fill in the swales

New lots are often graded with shallow swales along the property lines. They're there to carry water away, so keep them when the yard gets finished.

New lots settle

Soil backfilled around a new foundation keeps settling for a while. If low spots appear beside the house, top them up so water keeps running away from it.

If the budget is tight

Do the grading, the sod and the driveway first. Beds, stone and fencing can come later.

“I recently had the H Group complete a full outdoor project for me (landscaping, concrete, and vinyl fencing) and I couldn't be more satisfied. … The concrete work was done perfectly, and the vinyl fence looks amazing and feels very durable. What should I do first on a new build?

Grading comes first, then concrete and fences, then beds and sprinklers, and sod or turf last.

Can you do the sod, driveway and walkway together?

Yes. That's the whole idea: one crew, one quote and one schedule, so you're not juggling three contractors.

Do I need a permit for the driveway?

In Windsor, a driveway that crosses the boulevard needs a City permit. Other towns have their own rules. We'll go over what applies at the estimate.

Can sod go down right after the house is finished?

Yes, any time the ground isn't frozen, as long as the grade is right and the soil is ready.

How soon can you start?

Usually in about two weeks. A 15-person full-time crew means we can actually get to you.

Is the work covered by a warranty?

Yes. We offer a one-year warranty, and we'll go over what it covers for your job at the free estimate. We're also fully insured and WSIB covered.
