How a decorative finish gets done.

The same solid base.

A nice finish is only as good as what is under it. The ground gets dug out, compacted and sloped so water runs away from the house.

Stamped.

Coloured concrete gets pressed with patterned mats while it is still workable, so it looks like stone, slate or brick.

Exposed aggregate.

The top layer of the concrete gets washed away to show the stone in the mix. You get a natural texture with good grip underfoot.

Sealed.

A sealer brings out the colour and helps protect the surface from water and salt.

Is stamped concrete more expensive than regular concrete?

Yes. It takes colour, stamps, sealer and more labour, which adds about $6–$10 per sq ft to the broom-finish price. Exposed aggregate adds less, about $3–$5 per sq ft.

How long does stamped concrete last?

It's still concrete, so on a solid base it can last for decades. The finish needs more care than the slab: plan on resealing it every few years to keep the colour looking good.

Is stamped concrete slippery?

It can be when it's wet, more than a broom finish, because the sealer makes it smoother. A non-slip additive in the sealer helps on patios and around pools. Exposed aggregate has natural grip.

Stamped concrete or exposed aggregate: which is better?

Stamped gives you a pattern and colour that look like stone or slate. Exposed aggregate has a natural stone texture and costs less. We'll talk through what suits your house at the free estimate.

Can you stamp my existing driveway?

Stamping happens while the concrete is wet, so it's done on a new pour. If your old driveway is worn out, we break it out and pour a new one.

Can I salt stamped concrete?

Keep rock salt off it, especially in the first winter. Salt is hard on all new concrete. Our care guide covers the first year.
