How we build around a pool.
Water runs away.
The deck is sloped so rain and splash-out run away from the pool and the house, not into them.
A surface for wet feet.
A broom finish or exposed aggregate gives wet feet some grip. We'll talk through what suits your pool.
Turf where grass struggles.
Turf strips, side yards and the narrow spots around a pool stay green and mud-free, with no mowing or watering.
Everything else on one quote.
Fencing, stone beds, stepping pads and curbing go on the same quote and the same schedule.
Pool yards we built.
Landscaping around a pool: what to know.
A pool changes how the whole yard has to work. Here's what we plan for.
Plan the deck around how you'll use it
Think about where the chairs, the table and the barbecue go, and leave room to walk around them.
Keep the mess out of the water
Soil, mulch and leafy plants right beside a pool end up in it. Keep loose stone back from the edge too, with concrete between it and the water.
Turf in the sun
Turf stays green and mud-free, but it gets warm in full sun. A lot of people keep concrete or a shady spot for bare feet.
Pool fences have their own rules
In Windsor, a pool falls under its own by-law, separate from the regular fence rules, and the pool needs a permit from the City. Other towns have their own rules, so check before you build.
Lines under the yard
Free utility locates usually stop at the meter, so private lines to a pool heater or pump may not be marked. Tell us what you know about where they run.

What's the best surface around a pool?
Concrete with a broom finish or exposed aggregate gives you a solid surface with some grip. Many yards add turf strips or turf beside the deck to soften it.
Is a concrete pool deck slippery?
A smooth finish can be when it's wet. A broom finish or exposed aggregate has more grip, and a non-slip additive in the sealer helps on stamped concrete.
Can artificial turf go right up to a pool?
Yes. It drains, stays mud-free and doesn't get tracked into the water. It does get warm in full sun, so plan some concrete or shade for bare feet.
Do I need a permit for a pool fence?
In Windsor, a pool falls under its own by-law and needs a permit from the City, and the enclosure has its own rules. Other towns differ, so ask first. We'll go over what applies at the estimate.
