The size of the lawn
Sod is measured by the square foot, so the size of the area is the biggest part of the price. We measure it at the estimate rather than guessing from a photo.
Taking out the old lawn
If there's an old lawn, weeds or dead grass, it has to be stripped out and hauled away first. That's labour and disposal, and it's worth it: sod laid over an old lawn sits on top of the problem.
Levelling and fresh soil
Low spots, ground that slopes toward the house, and heavy clay all need work before sod goes down. New builds often need topsoil brought in. The more the ground needs, the more it costs, and the longer the lawn lasts.
Getting into the yard
An open front yard is quicker to work in than a backyard reached through a narrow side yard, where soil and sod have to be moved in by hand.
Anything done at the same time
Sprinklers, garden beds, curbing or a new driveway can go on the same quote. Doing them together means nobody has to dig up a brand-new lawn later.
Watch for quotes that skip the prep
The cheapest way to lay sod is straight over the old lawn without levelling. It looks fine for a few weeks. Then the bumps, low spots and weeds come back. When you compare quotes, ask what happens to the old lawn and the ground underneath.
