The size of the area
Most landscaping is priced by area: square feet of sod, turf or concrete, linear feet of curbing or fence. We measure it on site rather than guessing from a photo.
What has to come out
Old lawn, weedy beds, broken concrete or an old driveway all have to be removed and hauled away before anything new goes in. Removal and disposal are real costs, and they're often what a low quote leaves out.
What's under the ground
Low spots, ground sloping toward the house and heavy clay all need grading, and sometimes new soil. Turf and concrete need a compacted base. This prep doesn't show in the finished photos, but it's what makes the job last.
What goes in
Sod generally costs less than artificial turf up front. Concrete driveways and patios cost more than a lawn of the same size. Stone beds, curbing, shrubs and fencing each add their own material and labour.
Getting into the yard
An open front yard is quick to work in. A backyard reached through a narrow side yard means more work moving soil and materials by hand.
Shape and detail
Curved beds, curbing that follows the lines of the house and lots of small areas take longer than one large, simple rectangle.
How to spend it well
Fix the grading once, before anything goes on top. If the budget is tight, do the project in phases, front this year and back next. Doing related jobs together, like sod and sprinklers or a driveway and its edges, saves digging up new work later.
