Spring: the classic time
Once the ground has thawed and dried out enough to work, spring is a great time to lay sod. Cool temperatures and regular rain help new roots take hold before the summer heat arrives.
Spring is also when everyone wants a new lawn, so it's worth booking your estimate early.
Summer: fine, with more water
Windsor summers are hot and humid, and new sod dries out fast in that heat. It can still go down in July and August. It just needs watering every day, and sometimes twice a day in a heat wave, until the roots take hold.
Water early in the morning, so it soaks in before the heat of the day.
Early fall: one of the best times
September and October are some of the easiest months for new sod. The soil is still warm from summer, the air is cooler and less water evaporates, so the lawn needs less watering while it roots.
A lawn laid in early fall has time to root before winter and comes back strong in the spring.
Late fall and winter: wait for spring
Once the ground freezes, sod can't root into it. If it's too late in the year, plan for early spring, and book your estimate before the spring rush.
Whatever the season, prep matters most
A lot of Windsor yards sit on heavy clay that drains slowly. A new lawn lasts when the old lawn comes out first, the ground is levelled and sloped away from the house, and fresh soil goes down where the existing soil is poor. That's how we do every sod job.
